Putting well-earned money into the stock market can be over emphasized for first-time investors, unlike a bank where interest is sure thing! Well, basically times are uncertain, the market is out of control, and banks are gradually failing. I am working on a ballpark estimate of $5M for retirement, and I have a good 6-figure loaded up for this, could there be any opportunity for a boomer like me? I'm nearly 60.

As a relatively recent arrival on the channel, I'm working my way through Damien's back catalogue and just got to this episode. I think this question is more subtle and interesting than we might at first think... and there are elements here that we should be willing to take deeper look at. First observation is that Damien's first advice is to ignore external comparisons and focus on the basics: can we pay the bills and, if so, can we both invest [first] and enjoy holidays and/or hobbies with the rest. If the answer is yes, we're doing OK. On the other hand, the second observation is that we're "comparison machines" by nature and this can be both dangerous and helpful. It can be dangerous because it is too easy to make invalid comparisons. Your neighbour who lives in the house opposite goes out and buys a new BMW. Do you feel disenfranchised if you can't afford to do the same? What if I told you that your neighbour just received a £100k inheritance from a late aunt but decided to be foolish and blow it all on a car he didn't need, "because he could..." Feel so hard done by now, knowing you're investing wisely? I doubt it. But comparison helps if we can use it to ensure that we're not being disadvantaged. If we work in a company that has variable [unfixed] salary scales, the understand if we're earning more, less or the same as a "performance peer" can help us see if we're properly valued and can provide the impetus to change things up if we're not. And comparing the relative performance of investments over time helps us to ensure that we're making sound financial decisions. But. One of the elements I find most interesting here is to consider the question: "what is the right comparison to make?" If your aim in life is to retire with the biggest possible pension pot, then you're going to need to stay in employment for a lot longer than someone who retires when they have enough and is able to spend their days doing what they want. So I think comparison is helpful, not just in the apples-to-apples, number-to-number sense, but in the sense of what do I get in return for this (amount of money/time spent/whatever) and how important is that to me? Yes, it makes comparison harder on the surface. But it forces us to think about what matters most to us.

ATH could be seen as an indicator of an uptrend. It is usually a good thing to buy into an uptrend... :D

Can you do video on AVCs I’m 19 yr paid into my Strathclyde pension which is supposed to be deffered pension scheme for life thing is I will max out pension out bye time I’m 64 someone told me AVCs would be waste of cash but I don’t know why

When there are a thousand people arriving every day illegally, that require food clothing, shelter, medical care, schooling for their children, transportation, etc, etc, and their contribution to the social system is ZERO. Is it any wonder government spending is double what it should be?
